The Inland Empire, commonly known as the IE, is a metropolitan area centered around the cities of Riverside and San Bernardino in Southern California. The US Census Bureau categorizes it as the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario metropolitan area, though residents of certain areas within the two counties, such as the Coachella and Temecula Valleys, consider themselves separate.
According to the Census Bureau, the Inland Empire covers more than 27,000 square miles (70,000 km2) and is home to over 4 million people. In fact, it is the third most populated metropolitan area in the state of California and in the top 15 within in the United States.
The name "Inland Empire" was originally used to seperate the region from label Inland Empire from the popular coastal regions of Southern California. This region (near the end of the 19th century) was a major center of agriculture, including citrus, dairy, and wine-making.Though agriculture has seen a decline, the inland empire has seen a rapid increase in population since the 1970's due to families looking for inexpensive land prices and affordable housing. This has led to more residential, commercial, and industrial development throughout the area.
The Inland Empire has become a major shipping hub, due to the inexpensive land prices (compared to Los Angeles and Orange Counties), a large supply of vacant land, and a transport network where many highways and railroads intersect.
It is home to some of the nation's largest manufacturing companies, including: Toyota Motor Corporation's North American Parts and Logistics Distribution (NAPLD) center in Ontario and APL Logistics in Rancho Cucamonga. and Whirlpool Corporation. Many large companies use this hub to connect the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to destinations to the north and east such as Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Denver.
